Our Team

Steve Kilgallon head+action shot sm2

Steve Kilgallon: Steve began his career — and still works today — as a professional drummer, performing both in the studio and on live stages. In the early 2000s, he discovered a passion for audio production and quickly fell deep into the creative world of recording and engineering.

With nearly 20 years of studio experience and the perspective of a working musician, Steve has helped create countless meaningful and inspiring recording sessions

In 2010, he opened the doors to Sound Grotto, where he’s had the pleasure of working with so many incredible artists and clients over the years.

No matter the project or the techniques involved, the goal is always the same: to create a space that feels comfortable, welcoming, and creatively inspiring — the kind of environment where real magic can happen.

Fred Derby head+action shots

Fred Derby brings a rare depth of knowledge shaped by work across concert production, broadcast, and recording, with more than four decades of experience in the audio industry. This broad foundation has evolved into a current focus on system and acoustic design, where technical precision meets artistic intention.

Over the years, Fred has contributed to multiple projects that have earned RIAA certification, as well as recordings recognized with a NARAS nomination and various industry awards. Milestones that reflect both craftsmanship and a commitment to excellence. Having collaborated with world-renowned artists, producers, and engineers, he has developed a nuanced understanding of the creative process from every angle.

Equally fluent in music and audio science, Fred bridges the gap between artistic expression and technical execution. This dual perspective allows for a sensitive, genre-spanning approach that remains true to an artist’s vision. Whether working in the studio, on stage, or in design, the goal remains consistent: to honor the art.

Guided by one mentor’s philosophy, Fred continues to pursue work that strives “to make music that is emotionally accessible and yet still interesting,” a principle that informs every project and collaboration.
